In the first summer after graduating from college, Calvin went forward with another Sketch Summer campaign, a challenge of creating something new every day of summer. This year, Calvin pushed the definition of his campaign to its limit, creating art in a variety of mediums from pencil drawings to digital paints, from 3D models to video game, from pixel art to music. A lot was learned with new tools and new techniques, and some fun was had.

#TheSketchySummer 2022 (Day 7)Bit of a treat for you all today. Spent a lot of today cleaning up old files, preventing me from creating anything from scratch. So here's a quick video tour of an airship I've been modeling. You will be seeing this ship again soon!
#TheSketchySummer 2022 (Day 8)Experimenting with some head shapes by morphing the same base. This will have uses later...
#TheSketchySummer 2022 (Day 19)Recently got back into a DND campaign with a character I made named "Dr. Beldus." He uses a mechanical chest plate to replace his blood with the blood of nature's strongest warrior: The crab. I modeled and animated this chest plate today.
#TheSketchySummer 2022 (Day 21)Continued my Blender practice today by trying lip syncing. I used the add-on "Rhubarb" to automate syncing my custom-mouth shapes to a recording from another project. Not perfect, but impressive and a great starting point for me to further refine.
#TheSketchySummer 2022 (Day 22)Late-night upload thanks to the long render times on the piece. It's my first attempt at clouds in Blender! I like how they turned out here, but I don't think the method I used will be viable with how long it takes to cook.
#TheSketchySummer 2022 (Day 25)Sometimes it's nice to just be gliding among the clouds. (Music is a snippet of the track "Chronicles of Samus" from the fabulous Metroid fan album "Harmony of a Hunter Returns: https://youtube.com/watch?v=yjNmEfu55a4…)

#TheSketchySummer 2022 (Day 34)I’ve often pushed the limits of what could be considered a “sketch” in this campaign, and today I’m pushing it the furthest yet by showing off a music track I’m putting together. The back half still needs something, but it’s coming along nicely!
#TheSketchySummer 2022 (Day 36)Been prototyping a character controller for a while now and today I finally got something sharable. I’ve been struggling to get a melee combat system to work for… years… and now, after many YouTube tutorials, I have finally created a solution.
#TheSketchySummer 2022 (Day 37)Gave myself a fun challenge today, speed-modeling three things in 30 minutes each. Many things I could have done to model faster, but it was good practice nonetheless.
#TheSketchySummer 2022 (Day 43)In only two days, I fully modeled, textured, rigged, and posed the one, the only, one of my favorite original characters... Rachel Might! Half human and half video game character (On her father's side,) I hope to one day tell her story.
#TheSketchySummer 2022 (Day 46)The #GMTKJam is on for 2022! First day was very productive and my game is well under way. In fact, I've already got our main character, Rachel, suited up and animated for her mission.
#TheSketchySummer 2022 (Day 48)My #GMTKJam game, "Agents Never Die" (https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-jam-2022/rate/1621518…) is about rolling dice to move your way through a level. However, the noise of rolling dice alerts guards. This can be a detriment, or you can use it as a distraction, like in the clip.
#TheSketchySummer 2022 (Day 72)Stretching the limits of this daily art campaign once again by showcasing an even rougher music track than last time. I like a lot of the elements I've got so far, it feels energetic, but it needs more to really rock.
#TheSketchySummer 2022 (Day 81)Here we have a body doing some calisthenics with a bit of a twist in the second set: The body's promotions change on the fly without me altering the original animation. This is a HUGE breakthrough for my character creator game I'm working on.

#TheSketchySummer 2022 (Day 88)
Today is move-in day for my sister's college, so I declare this the end of summer. At the end of every Sketchy Summer, I like to look back on the art I made and this time, I had a few colorful friends join me in this year's retrospective.
Fun detail about this: I put together this little retrospective on my Steam Deck while in the car on the way to my sister’s college. I loaded all the images and models onto its Micro SD card last night and spent the whole drive today animating, compositing, and rendering.
